Roaming & travel

Roaming explained: use your phone abroad without surprises

What roaming really is, when it is free, and the three settings to change before you land so a trip never ends in a shock bill.

Roaming means using your normal SIM on a foreign network. It is convenient — your number just works — but the cost depends entirely on where you go and what your plan includes.

When it is free

Within the EU/EEA, “roam like at home” rules let most European plans work abroad at no extra charge, up to a fair-use limit. Some operators run similar free zones in other regions — check yours before assuming.

When it is expensive

Outside your included zone, data is billed per megabyte and can run into real money in minutes, because apps keep syncing quietly in the background. Calls and texts add up too.

Do this before you travel

Turn off data roaming unless it is clearly included, buy your operator’s travel pass if you will use data, and switch off background app refresh. If your destination is pricey, an eSIM is usually far cheaper — see our guide below.
